A Soggy Mothers Day win for the U11's

Writer: Jonathan PowellJonathan Powell

After several weeks of cancelled matches, the U11's were raring to go for their midday kickoff. Only when we arrived at the pitch did we really appreciate why the previous matches had been cancelled. Even the parents were struggling to find a patch of ground that wasn't under water. As it transpired all matches from 1pm onwards ended up being cancelled.

Up against PKS for the first time, it became obvious that the last few weekends at Goals had transformed the U11's. Playing some very neat little passes through the wet and mud, they set about their task creating chance after chance. The PKS goalkeeper however was well up to the task and pulled off some great saves to keep the score at 0-0.

Eventually, POTM Joe, broke the deadlock with a fine strike to put Barkingside ahead. This was soon followed up by a lovely goal from William, jumping on a clearance and rifling home from 20 meters.

Barkingside continued in the same form, pushing players forward and looking for another goal when PKS suddenly burst forward and were one on one with Milo in goal. Milo stood firm and unfortunately for the PKS striker he slipped in the mud at the last moment putting his shot wide of the goal.

Shortly after, Barkingside won a penalty which Olivia put straight down the middle. Unfortunately for her, the goalkeeper stood his ground and made an easy save.

Into the second half and rain continued to fall and Barkingside continued to push for goals although the conditions were getting worse and worse.

PKS, who were now up to full strength, started to push for a consolation goal but great defending and some great clearances kept them out.

Another penalty for Barkingside and a great save from the PKS keeper but the match was now more or less over. At least it seemed that way to the parents who were convinced the game had gone on far longer than it should have.

Finally the whistle and a grateful throng, who were by now the only people left, happily left for home.
